The name kiwi was given in honor of the bird with fine plumage and long beak symbol of New Zealand, home of the kiwi plant. In Italy the kiwi was introduced in the seventies, becoming in the eighties one of the principal tree crops. Currently Italy is the largest producer in the world with an acreage of 22.000 hectares and a production that exceeds 380.000 tons. The most common variety is the Hayward, hairy-skinned fruit, bright green pulp with excellent organoleptic qualities and high shelflife.
